England head coach Sarina Wiegman was delighted with her side’s performance as they defeated Spain 1-0 in a UEFA Women’s Nations League fixture at Wembley last night.

Jess Park netted the only goal of the game from close range in the first half as the Lionesses collected an impressive victory against the world champions.

When speaking to the media after the match, England boss Wiegman said that it was a great performance as a collective and that she was impressed with her side both on and off the ball.

“Of course, I am really happy with the win,” Wiegman said. “I think it was an absolute team performance; we fought for every yard of the pitch against a very good opponent.

“It was a very intense game and we had some very good moments. We played well in-possession in moments and against Spain, you also know that you have to defend very well to keep the ball out of the net and we did that well. They did have a couple of opportunities but overall, I am really happy with how the team stood up and how we worked so hard to get this over the line.”

Manchester City ace Park has found goals hard to come by at international level but Wiegman believes that the player’s strike against Spain will boost her confidence in-front of the opposition goal.

She said “I hope it gives her a lot of confidence but I think it really helps. I think she grew into the game. In the first part of the game, she had to adapt but I think later on, she really got into it and it absolutely helps when you score a goal.”

Wiegman opted to field Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton rather than Mary Earps and she admits that the battle for the number one jersey is red-hot.

She said “I think she had a very good performance, the whole team had a very good performance. We have three goalkeepers in our squad, two are fighting for the number one position and they’re both world-class goalkeepers. That’s what we see all of the time and they give me headaches.”

England return to UEFA Women’s Nations League action in April when they face Belgium in back-to-back home and away fixtures.
