Amorim says process more important than trophy for Manchester United this season | OneFootball

Ruben Amorim has said the process of rebuilding Manchester United is more important to him than trophy success this season.

Manchester United travel to Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie tomorrow evening.

After exiting the FA Cup to Fulham last weekend, the Europa League represents the last chance of silverware for the season. Success in the competition also earns Champions League qualification.

With the Red Devils currently 14th in the Premier League table, success in the Europa League represents their best chance of securing European football for next season.

Despite the potential dual benefit of trophy success and Champions League qualification, Amorim has insisted the Europa League is not his forefront objective.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Portuguese said he is looking at the long-term picture and his attempt to ‘build something’ sustainable at Old Trafford.

“Of course we lost last week to the [FA Cup] so people are looking at this Europa League as the unique competition we can win, also the connection with winning the Europa League with Champions League,” he said.

“But to tell you the truth I think we have bigger things to think, I know it’s strange to say that but it’s something we’re trying to build here that is going to be more important than winning a cup in this moment.

“I know the responsibility we have to fight for every trophy but in this moment we’re trying to build something that will last more than any trophy this season.”
