Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim explains what prompted him to replace Amad Diallo with Alejandro Garnacho ahead of the Arsenal clash.

The Red Devils will kickstart their FA Cup campaign with a third-round clash against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium. The contest kicks off at 15:00 UK time.

In his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Portuguese manager hinted he’ll opt for his strongest lineup, perhaps with the exception of Andre Onana who would make way for Altay Bayindir between the sticks.

True to his word, Amorim maintained almost the same lineup that returned from Anfield with an impressive draw against Liverpool last weekend. However, the absence of Amad raised many eyebrows, as the 22-year-old winger has been one of the club’s standout performers this season.

So in his pre-match interview, Amorim explained that the Ivorian had a slight physical problem during the week, so he decided to drop him from the starting lineup, while taking the opportunity to heap praise on his replacement Garnacho.

“Amad [Diallo] had a small issue during the week and I like the way Garnacho plays – he is playing well.” he told BBC.

“The way he is training we felt it was a good opportunity to see Garnacho start the game.”

The 39-year-old is also looking to see improvement on several fronts, especially on set-pieces. After all, the Red Devils faithful would remember how Arsenal scored twice from dead-ball situations the last time these two sides met.

“We are focused on being competitive on the small things and on the set-pieces that’s a tough thing to beat this team in that department.

“We have to show more aggression in the final third. We have a great history in this competition and we want to win.”
