Spanish national team captain Álvaro Morata has named a pair of former Barcelona stars, as key figures in his decision to continue his international career at Euro 2024.

Frontman Morata is for his part of course fresh off a night to remember on Sunday.

After leading Spain into a European Championship finale showdown with England, the Atlético Madrid star saw his side emerge on the right side of an eventual 2-1 result.

Though Morata did not enjoy the most productive of evenings from an individual standpoint, his tireless efforts off the ball, and link-up play with the rest of La Roja’s attackers, proved an absolutely vital component in Luis de la Fuente’s setup.

All of a Spanish persuasion will therefore no doubt be interested to hear that, had things played out just a little differently, their side’s captain may not have taken his place at the tournament at all.

Speaking in the aftermath of the full-time whistle in Berlin, an emotional Morata provided a fresh insight into some of the struggles he has faced, owing to mental health concerns.

The 31-year-old has been increasingly outspoken when it comes to as much of late, admitting that the intense criticism and abuse to which he has been subjected in his home country has long taken its toll.

In fact, in the aftermath of the last World Cup, Morata gave serious consideration to calling time on his international career.

As confirmed by the striker on Sunday night, however, two players, both of whom made their names in the colours of Barcelona, proved central in convincing him to carry on:

“If it wasn’t for the help of Bojan and Iniesta, I wouldn’t have played in this Euro Cup.”
