You may have seen claims of Alexander Isak set to use ‘Little known FIFA rule’ to walk away from Newcastle United.
Claims from embarrassing media and desperate Liverpool fans, acting like they had discovered the secret of life itself.
The claims going along the lines of Alexander Isak could now use FIFA Article 17 to unilaterally terminate his contract with Newcastle United and walk away.
As explained below, this isn’t real life, certainly not with what is happening with Alexander Isak, Newcastle United and Liverpool (or any other club that might want to sign him).
The reason that this FIFA rule is ‘little known’ is because it is ‘very little used’, that is able to be used.
Any genius claiming this could be used by Alexander Isak simply because Newcastle United aren’t willing to sell him on the cheap, doesn’t then have the answer as to why then doesn’t every player do this when in circumstances similar to Isak’s.
For Liverpool fans and desperate media who don’t have a clue, there is no magic key to all of this, Liverpool would need to offer an amount of money that Newcastle United would be willing to accept, just like in any normal transfer transaction.
‘Alexander Isak cannot terminate his contract at Newcastle to force a transfer to Liverpool this summer using a FIFA rule revised after Lassana Diarra’s court case.
Article 17 of FIFA’s Regulations on the Transfer and Status of Players was rewritten following a court case last year which ruled their previous wording breached EU law.
This came after former Real Madrid midfielder Diarra legally challenged FIFA over their rules on transfers, relating to his ban and €10 million fine for a breach of contract in attempting to move from Lokomotiv Moscow to Charleroi in 2014.
It has been speculated that Isak could now invoke the amended Article 17 to unilaterally terminate his contract with Newcastle without reason.
But that is not possible, at least this summer, and any move that would take to striker to Liverpool before the transfer window closes would require a traditional agreement with his current club Newcastle.
The rule would need to be invoked within 15 days of the end of a season, meaning the earliest Isak could do so would be mid-June 2026.
