Alexander Isak is set to feature for Sweden during the next international break despite not being selected for Newcastle United so far this season while he has reportedly been seeking too leave the club.
The Swede has been included in his national teams squad for the upcoming fixtures against Slovenia and Kosovo next month, however, the striker has not played for Newcastle in pre-season or in their first two Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa and Liverpool.
Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson said: “I am very happy that Alexander Isak wants to be in the squad, he is a huge player.
“The situation he is in is not perfect and he has not trained with the team. But he is a player who can decide matches and he wants to be part of our squad. The World Cup is important for Alexander Isak.”
During the summer Isak trained at his former club Real Sociedad but has not yet rejoined Newcastle first-team training.
On the 19 August he released a social media statement saying: “Promises were broken and trust is lost” indicating that he wants to leave the club this summer.
Liverpool have reportedly had a bid worth £110 million rejected for him but are yet to follow up with another improved one since.
The striker netted 24 times in the Premier League last season in 34 appearances last season and was named in the PFA Team of the Year but he refused to attend the ceremony amid speculation over his future.
Eddie Howe and Newcastle still do not know whether they will have Isak will be in the Newcastle squad come September, he called for clarity on the situation after his side’s 3-2 loss to Liverpool.
“From our side, we want clarity, we want to move forward. We want the narrative to change because we’re in the start of the season now, we’re into the action and we’ve got to get results and we’ve got to try and focus on what we can control,” Howe explained.
“We’ve given two really, really good performances. We’ve ended up with one point. That’s tough for us to take and especially in this moment where you are looking for positive to clinging to, but we battle through and we now go on to Leeds.”
With less than a week to go until the transfer window shuts on Monday Isak’s future is yet to be resolved.
