Alex Baena joins Atlético de Madrid | OneFootball

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Alex Baena from Villarreal, with the Spanish midfielder putting pen to paper on a five-year contract that runs until 2030.

The 23-year-old, known for his creativity and versatility in the final third, leaves Villarreal after spending his entire senior career with the club. He played a key role in their fifth-place finish in La Liga last season, securing a spot in the Champions League group stage.

Baena has been capped 10 times for Spain’s senior team, scoring twice, and was part of the squad that lifted the European Championship trophy last summer under Luis de la Fuente.

Over his time at Villarreal, he netted 26 goals in total, and in the 2023–24 campaign, he led La Liga in assists with 14. He followed that up with seven goals and nine assists in 32 league appearances last season.

Baena becomes Atletico’s latest addition of the window, following the arrival of left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta.
