Ryan Mason started his tenure as Baggies boss with a victory thanks to Isaac Price’s first half goal.
The last time that Albion kicked off their campaign with a home victory was in 2017 when Tony Pulis’s team beat Bournemouth 1-0 on the opening day thanks to a goal from Ahmed Hegazi. The Baggies followed that up with a 1-0 win at Burnley which lifted them to second in the Premier League table, but the campaign ended in relegation. The last time that Albion won their first game of a second tier campaign at the Hawthorns was in 2006 when a debut double from John Hartson earned Brian Robson’s team a 2-0 victory over Hull City.
Mason takes his new team to Wrexham next week looking to secure back-to-back victories – if that happens, it would be the first time since 1997 that Albion won their opening two matches of a second tier season. That year, Ray Harford’s team followed up a 2-1 victory at home to Tranmere Rovers with a 3-2 win at Crewe Alexandra.
