Ever since news first broke of his desire to depart Manchester United this month, Barcelona was named as Marcus Rashford’s preferred destination.

Now, he may just be on the verge of sealing such a move, as Sport claims the forward has reached a full agreement with the Blaugrana to spend to second half of the campaign playing under Hansi Flick.

The only remaining factor delaying the deal is Barcelona’s precarious financial situation, which has left them frantically trying to free up space on the wage list to ensure they can sanction Rashford’s arrival.

Last week, it was thought that AC Milan were front-runners to land the England international – hailed as ‘unstoppable’ by ex-manager Erik ten Hag – before the deadline. Then, when Manchester City captain Kyle Walker openly disclosed his intent to depart the Etihad this month, Milan turned their attention to him.

The Serie A giants can register only one more non-EU player into their squad, meaning they had to choose between Rashford or his cross-city compatriot this week. All signs are currently pointing towards them opting for the latter.

Rashford: Will he stay or will he go?

Despite his continued omissions from Ruben Amorim’s setup, it remains entirely plausible that Rashford stays at Old Trafford and sees out 2024/2025 with his boyhood club.

If that does turn out to be the case, you’d imagine the manager would have to restore him to the squad at some point, as letting a £325,000-a-week star sit out each week will only drive down his transfer value and hurt United in the long run.

From his point of view, the 27-year-old is presumably crossing his fingers and hoping Barcelona can resolve their financial constraints to the point he can be registered in the coming days. Whether a buy clause would be included in any prospective loan agreement remains to be seen.
