La Liga champions Barcelona have late this week been targeted in ruthless fashion, amid their ongoing pursuit of Athletic Club star Nico Williams.

This comes amid claims that the Blaugrana have lost their way as a club, no longer possessing the kind of values which they for so long upheld.

The comments in question were on Friday laid out by Aitor Elizigi.

Former president of Athletic Club, Elizigi this week sat down for an interview with Radio MARCA, during which he was inevitably drawn on his ex-team’s likely loss of Nico Williams this summer.

And drawn specifically on the role of Barcelona – who look set to land the 22-year-old – in as much, the former San Mamés chief made use of the opportunity to aim a series of digs at those currently in power at the Camp Nou:

“The Barça of recent years is quite far from the memory we all have and the values it represented in its day. It is no longer unique.

“It is very difficult for them to occupy the space they want, they make movements of the nouveau riche, of a kid, of someone who does not behave. It’s not easy to be in the elite of European football. The Athletic model works and is well thought out, I don’t know if the current model of Barcelona is so well thought out.”

Elizigi also had some harsh words for Barca sporting director Deco, adding:

“Laporta has chosen a sporting director like Deco. You have to know who you surround yourself with. It’s a shame…”
