The rebuild of AC Milan is in full swing. Fresh from clinching the signing of Luka Modrić – Real Madrid’s 39-year-old Ballon d’Or winner and their most decorated ever footballer – the Rossoneri have also secured Ardon Jashari and are on the hunt for more reinforcements to challenge for Serie A.

Modric’s move to Milan

On July 14th, Luka Modrić signed a one-year contract. The midfielder, who captained Croatia to the World Cup final in 2018, arrives intent on winning trophies and adapting quickly to Massimiliano Allegri’s system.

Modric will add trophy-winning experience in midfield after a record-breaking career with Real Madrid. He has set his sights on improvement after Milan’s disappointing 2024/25 season.

“Milan cannot accept average,” Modrić declared on Milan TV, promising to work “hard, fight, and help my teammates in every aspect”.

Other AC Milan Signings and probable transfers

Earlier this week, AC Milan confirmed the €39 million capture of Switzerland international Ardon Jashari from Club Brugge on a contract until 2030. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder will link up with Modrić and Samuele Ricci, bolstering a midfield that combines world-class experience with youthful energy.

Jashari – who was named Player of the Year in Belgium last season – is scheduled to undergo final medicals this week before being fully integrated into Allegri’s squad.

AC Milan’s pursuit of 20-year-old Swiss right-back Zachary Athekame continues. After an initial €7 million offer was turned down by Young Boys, Milan reportedly tabled a revised €9 million bid. Talks are ongoing, with Athekame poised to provide a youthful, athletic option at full-back.

Elsewhere, Newcastle’s reported €30 million approach for 23-year-old centre-back Malick Thiaw was firmly rejected. AC Milan, valuing defensive solidity, have no intention of parting with the Germany international, who has impressed Allegri in pre-season. He featured in 32 Serie A matches last season and is viewed as a long-term cornerstone at the back.

Despite aggressive midfield and defensive moves, Milan’s forward line remains an area to address. Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez had reportedly been shortlisted but is now nearing a move to the Saudi Pro League. Both Luka Jovic and Tammy Abraham have departed from last season’s squad.

Revamped Squad

With Modrić’s leadership and Jashari’s dynamism, Allegri’s revamped Rossoneri squad is shaping up. The coming weeks will reveal if Milan can complete their overhaul by adding a much-needed goalscorer to their ranks.
