Ferguson bowed out on a high at the end of the 2012–13 season as he guided United to Premier League glory. Little did the United fans know at the time, that would be their last league title for quite some time.

Several managers have sat in the hot seat in the post-Ferguson era and despite some highs along the way, they have each struggled to live up to the standards that were set by Ferguson.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag have all been given the top job and they have each had varying degrees of success during their time in charge.

“Alex Ferguson knew where the club was going and he got out of there as quick as he could, and they’re still picking up the pieces now,” Wayne Rooney said in his documentary from 2022.

Sustaining the success of Ferguson was always going to be tough, but few people predicted United’s drop-off to be just as dramatic as it has turned out.

Ten Hag seemingly had United back on an upward trajectory last season, but he has run into some troubles in his second season. United currently sit eighth in the table and run the risk of missing out on Champions League football.

We’ve picked out nine shocking stats which highlight United’s decline since Ferguson left the club in 2013.

– United have now lost as many Premier League home games since Sir Alex Ferguson retired (34) as they did during his entire 26-year reign at the club.

– United have lost half of their games in the Premier League this season with five defeats, their most defeats from their opening 10 games of a league campaign since 1986-87.

– Former United flop Bebe has scored more league goals in 2023-24 (two) than Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, Antony, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho have combined.

– United have only accumulated more than 80 points in one season since Ferguson retired. During Ferguson’s time at the club, United finished with 80 or more points on 16 occasions.

– During the Premier League era, United finished in the top four for 21 consecutive seasons under Ferguson. Since his departure, United have finished outside of the top four in five of the last 10 seasons.

– United are currently projected to finish the season with 57 points, which would be their lowest ever tally in the Premier League era.
