⚔️ Match of the Day

We've got a quartet of mouth-watering clashes tonight but the undoubted highlight comes from Madrid.

Diego Simeone's Atleti host Carlo Ancelotti's Real in a game that could well decide not just who goes into the last eight of the Champions League but the Italian's future too.

Rumours abound that Ancelotti is keen to stay at Santiago Bernabéu beyond this season but with Xabi Alonso's name haunting the halls of the famous old stadium, a Champions League exit at this early stage could usher in a new era at the world's biggest club.

For Atleti meanwhile, this is not just a chance to knock their hated rivals out of the competition they love most, but also an opportunity to banish memories of finals in 2014 and 2016.

And as ever, the ace in the pack for Atleti is the Metropolitano.

The Colchoneros are on a 12-match unbeaten run at home this season and have so far won three and drawn one of their four European games in front of their own fans.

It will be like a bear pit in there and despite their opponents being back to virtual full-strength, they will surely back themselves to overcome their 2-1 deficit and reach the last eight.

Just how do Arsenal approach this second leg against PSV?

The reserve fixture in the Netherlands last week was remarkable with the Gunners winning 7-1 at a stadium that had previously seen victories over the likes of Juventus, Liverpool and Girona.

But that victory has been something of an aberration for Mikel Arteta's side of late, with the north London outfit having won just two of their last six games in all competitions and scoring just three goals in the process.

With a six-goal advantage heading into this game though, one would expect Arteta to rest some of his key men like Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice and Gabriel.

It could also be a good chance to allow some younger players to gain more meaningful minutes or get those crucial squad players renewed confidence heading into the season's home straight.

Don't be surprised if Raheem Sterling or Josh Nichols potentially get a run out in what should be easy progression for Arsenal.

Jonathan David has been one of the standout performers for Lille in 2024/25, further solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising forwards.

The Canadian international has continued to be the focal point of their attack, combining pace, a lethal eye for goal and intelligent movement, netting six goals in the competition so far.

The latest defence he'll be bothering is Borussia Dortmund's with their game finely-poised at 1-1 from the first leg.

Stade Pierre-Mauroy is the venue with Lille unbeaten on home soil in Europe this term. Three wins and a draw have seen Les Dogues become one of the most underrated teams left in the competition and they will surely fancy their chances of causing an upset.

With David almost certainly heading for the exit door whatever happens this summer, the 25-year-old will not want this to be his European goodbye.

Club Brugge have it all to do, but don't count out the Belgians as they head to Villa Park tonight.

The first game at Jan Breydel Stadium saw Aston Villa triumph 3-1 but the Premier League side were incredibly fortunate to come away from that game with a two-goal advantage.

A late Brandon Machele own goal and then Marco Asensio's stoppage time penalty put gloss on the result for Unai Emery's side with Brugge outplaying their English rivals almost from minute one.

In Hans Vanaken, Brugge have one of Europe's most in-form players right now whilst forwards Christos Tzolis and Ferran Jutglà are scoring goals for fun. In fact, Vanaken and Jutglà were the heroes this past weekend as Nicky Hayen's men won the Brugge derby against Cercle.

FCB head to the Midlands then, knowing that they're more than capable of getting one over on Villa, but have to eliminate those silly mistakes which cost them so dear last Tuesday.

📊 Fascinating stat

Since winning eight consecutive away games against Atlético de Madrid between January 2008 and February 2014, Real Madrid have only won three of their last 17 away matches against their rivals in all competitions .
