Chelsea have once again been linked with interest in Juventus winger Federico Chiesa.

The 26 year old looks to be up for sale this summer, and both Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked in connection with him already. Manchester United’s name is also mentioned.

Chiesa has been on the road to recovery for a couple of years after some bad injuries, and had a good year with Juve, as well as making himself first choice for Italy again. He racked up 12 G/A in 25 starts in the Italian top flight last season.

This report from the Gazzetta dello Sport says he would be available at around €30-40m, so he would certainly be affordable – but there are big question marks about whether a player in their mid 20s at that price really fits into our sporting directors’ current model as it stands. We have our doubts, especially given the wages he would want.

Some suspicious chatter

If the reports about his price are true, then it’s very plausible that Chelsea are interested, and we could certainly see a big going in later in the window if Chiesa is still there and if we still haven’t secured another signing in those positions.

However the rumours around Chiesa and Chelsea haven’t been particularly hot in these last two years, and that does make sense. After his bad injuries the formerly dynamic winger seems to have lost his explosiveness, and he struggles to stand out even in Serie A these days. It’s easy to imagine scouts have written him off as a potential big success in the Premier League, despite his pedigree.

Surely someone will take the plunge eventually when the price gets low enough – but we have our doubts it will be Chelsea. A lot of these connections with the Premier League sound suspiciously like agent’s hyping their client up, to us.
