Two of the ten inaugural teams in Major League Soccer have a storied history. Most recently, the Los Angeles Galaxy eliminated the Colorado Rapids with ease last season. With 11 goals in the two game set (best of three opening round series), the LA Galaxy added more hardware with their sixth MLS Cup title.
The LA Galaxy were the first team to lose in the MLS Cup Finals. DC United raised the inaugural trophy in 1996. They did so again when they ousted the Rapids.
Before losing three more times in the finals, the Los Angeles Galaxy would finally taste victory on MLS's grandest stage in 2002. They would win for a second time three years later and fall short in their sixth finals appearance.
Colorado won their first and only title in 2010 against FC Dallas. The LA Galaxy would go on to become the third MLS team to win back-to-back titles in the next two seasons after (2011 & 2012). A fifth title was hoisted in 2014, ten years before last season's historic sixth MLS title.
Quite a few faces donned both an LA Galaxy jersey and one of the Colorado Rapids during this time. Here is a look at three of the players who did so.
The forward from Newport Beach, California, played six seasons with the LA Galaxy. His first season was in 2011 when the team became a three-time champion in the league. McBean was also with the LA Galaxy the next year when they became a four-time champion, as well.
McBean remained one of the teams bigger and locally grown talents on the roster. He began his professional soccer career as a member of the LA Galaxy's youth team in 2009 through 2011.
The six-foot tall scorer found the back of the net 26 times in 65 appearances for the LA Galaxy. He was relegated to the second team following the 2014 MLS season and later traded to the Colorado Rapids after the 2017 season.
With the Rapids, McBean scored twice in his 22 appearances for the Rapids. He retired after he wrapped up his first and only season with Colorado.
In the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, the Los Angeles Galaxy selected the Mampong, Ashanti, Ghana native in the second round. He played in 12 games between 2013 and 2014 across all competitions while scoring once.
Opare also played for the LA Galaxy's II team before being sent to DC United ahead of his original MLS team winning their fifth championship.
He played in 65 games for DC United before joining the Colorado Rapids in 2019. His professional playing career ended after appearing in three games.
Born Michael David Barrios Puerta, the five-foot, four-inch winger broke into MLS in 2015 with FC Dallas. In six seasons, he made 179 appearances and scored 31 goals.
In 2017 and 2019, he finished in the top 5 in MLS in assists. Barrios is just one of five MLS players to record 30 goals and 40 assists in the past ten years.
The Barranquilla, Colombia native then switched teams in 2021. In three seasons with the Colorado Rapids, Barrios also played in 87 games across all competitions. He scored 12 times and another two times in 2022 with the Rapids second team.
In just six games with the LA Galaxy, Barrios scored once while recording only 108 minutes.
