Real Madrid are in talks to bring Liverpool’s homegrown hero, Trent Alexander-Arnold, to the Spanish capital before the Club World Cup kicks off on 15 June. With his contract expiring on 30 June, the 26-year-old has confirmed he will not be renewing terms at Anfield. Now, Los Blancos are looking to accelerate his arrival — a symbolic twist to what’s already an emotional farewell.
According to Football Insider, finance expert Stefan Borson believes both clubs are poised to agree on a fee of around £1million to make the early switch happen.

“I would think they will reach an agreement.”
Liverpool, now Premier League champions under new boss Arne Slot, may see sense in finalising the departure early — not just sentimentally, but financially too.
Liverpool stand to save a chunk of wages and potential bonuses by allowing the transfer before the end of Alexander-Arnold’s contract. For a player due to leave anyway, it’s a pragmatic solution.
“It won’t be very much. I know people have talked about big numbers here, but you’ve got to remember, from the end of the season until the end of June, Liverpool are basically paying for somebody else’s player to be on holiday.”
Borson continues with a hint of commercial realism.
“They may want to sort of prevent him from playing for Real, but I doubt it because I think they’re having to pay quite a lot of money for that. It’s going to be well over £1million for them to pay his salary while he’s on holiday for June.”
This is about business sense, not emotion. With bonuses possibly due and wages ticking on, both clubs have incentive to find a clean, early solution.
Since his debut in 2016, Alexander-Arnold has transformed from academy graduate to world-class full-back. His 352 appearances, 42 of which came in this title-winning campaign, include four goals and eight assists this season alone.
This isn’t just any player leaving. It’s one of Liverpool’s own, a Champions League and Premier League winner, and arguably the most influential right-back of his generation.
Slot’s Liverpool have already started shifting focus. According to Football Insider, they’ve cooled interest in Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, with Mohamed Salah committed until 2027. That may relieve pressure in the wide areas, but replacing Alexander-Arnold’s creativity will be no easy task.
Whether Conor Bradley is ready to step up or Liverpool dip into the market remains to be seen, but this is a summer of transition at Anfield.
From a fan’s perspective, this stings — even if it makes business sense. Trent Alexander-Arnold is Liverpool. To see him leave is one thing, but to see him possibly wear the white of Real Madrid before his contract expires? That’s tough to stomach.
Yes, there’s logic in saving wages, but we’re talking about a club legend. His final goodbye should come with dignity, not behind the scenes in a negotiation room. And let’s be honest — £1million is pocket change for Liverpool. Surely, a proper farewell in front of the Anfield crowd in July, perhaps a testimonial or curtain-closer, would mean more than a minor financial gain?
“They may want a small amount of compensation. Maybe £1million, something relatively token like that.”
If that’s true, then this feels rushed. Fans deserved a chance to say goodbye the right way — not read about it as he prepares for Real Madrid’s latest campaign. Arne Slot may be building a new chapter, but this ending feels unfinished.
Letting Trent go early could be the first misstep in an otherwise bright new era.
