Gianluca Zambrotta says he’ll soon start an ‘experimental project’ to develop young Italian players and insists Gennaro Gattuso is the right replacement for Luciano Spalletti: ‘It’s crucial to restore the value of a national team call-up.’

Italy World Cup winner Zambrotta will join his former 2006 teammate Simone Perrotta and ex-Italy coach Cesare Prandelli in a new project launched by FIGC to exploit the potential of young Italian players.

“I’ll be working with Cesare Prandelli and Simone Perrotta. Together with Maurizio Viscidi, Club Italia, the Technical sector, the Youth and School sector,” Zambrotta told Gazzetta.

“Our goal is to help young players grow. In the coming weeks, we’ll meet to lay the foundation for an experimental project that will benefit from everyone’s input and support.”

Zambrotta: Gattuso must restore a sense of belonging

Gattuso was unveiled as the new Italy coach earlier this week.

“Appointing Gattuso as head coach, having Buffon in a leadership role, and Bonucci on Rino’s staff are moves aimed at reigniting enthusiasm, attachment to the shirt, and a sense of belonging,” said Zambrotta.

“It’s crucial to restore the value of a national team call-up. When I played, even if I was injured, I’d still go to Coverciano, and if I could, I’d grit my teeth and play.

“I care about him [Gattuso] and I respect him. He has great values and could be the right person to help us achieve our goals.

“At this moment, the right decision was made.”

Zambrotta continued talking about his ex-Italy 2006 teammate and fellow World Cup winner: “His teams play good football because he’s evolved through his experiences,” said the former Juventus and Milan full-back.

“He’s a meticulous coach, paying close attention to every detail. With him, you work hard both physically and tactically.

“He just needs to remain true to himself. Clear, transparent, direct, and pass on his love for the Azzurri shirt.”

Gattuso will make his debut in the World Cup qualifiers against Estonia on September 5.

“It has become more difficult [to qualify for the World Cup] because we were exhausted against a Norway side that was playing at full speed,” noted Zambrotta.

“I hope we’ll see a different Italy in September. Rino won’t have much time, but the opponents are within reach, as long as we recover enthusiasm.

“We need to rebuild a group that enjoys being together. The only objective must be the qualification for the World Cup, possibly directly, because the playoffs are tough.”

Lastly, the 48-year-old sent a message to the Azzurri players as well: “Playing for the national team is an honour. The Azzurri shirt must always be defended and honoured.”
