Young vs. experienced: Bayern bosses disagree on coach search

There is disagreement in FC Bayern Munich’s search for a coach. The decision as to whether a young or an experienced coach should take the helm is dividing the club’s management. But the list of possible coaches is getting shorter and shorter.

Following the cancellation of Thomas Tuchel, those responsible at FC Bayern are once again called upon to make a landmark decision. Max Eberl, who has only been in charge of sport for ten weeks, is faced with one of the most difficult tasks of his career: organising Tuchel’s successor.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the internal debate centres on the question of whether the future should be in the hands of a young, innovative coach or an experienced, established coach.

There seems to be no consensus among the management on the coaching issue – while Freund and Eberl, for example, were in favour of Tuchel staying, Hoeneß and Rummenigge are said to have been sceptical.

Although the club has been actively searching for a new coach for months, fans and the team are still waiting for a final announcement. Hansi Flick, who led the club to the treble in 2020, is seen by many at the club as a potential solution. His potential return would bring continuity and experience to the team, which is in desperate need of a fresh start after a title-less season and a second-place finish in the Bundesliga. However, there are said to be sceptics in the ranks of those responsible.

Eberl: „It feels like ten years.“

The situation is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for Eberl. „I’m not a saviour,“ he emphasised when he took office, but the ongoing failures in the search for a coach are putting a strain on his position. The sporting director himself admits that he underestimated the challenges. „I’ve only been there ten weeks, it feels like ten years,“ said Eberl with a pained smile after the last game of the season.

The search is proving to be a challenge: favoured candidates such as Xabi Alonso or Julian Nagelsmann have already turned their backs, and even international names such as Zinedine Zidane or Jose Mourinho do not appear to be options. The question of a coach remains unresolved and the pressure on those responsible grows with every day that passes without a solution.

Despite the difficulties, Eberl remains optimistic and emphasises the need to make a decision soon. „We’ve saved the best for last,“ he said after the defeat in Hoffenheim, raising hopes of a solution to the coaching issue in the near future.
