Spurs have captured the Dutch international for a fee that Standard Sport understands to be around £51million.

The attacking midfielder, who can also play out wide, moves to north London despite links with a switch to Chelsea earlier in the summer.

Simons becomes Spurs’ fourth signing of the transfer window - their first under new boss Thomas Frank - following Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha, and Kota Takai through the entrance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

They also made deals for Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel permanent.

"I'm really happy and can't wait to get going,” Simons said of his move.

“I've been dreaming of this for a long time. It's a great club and when I met the head coach I knew straight away that this was the right place for me.

"I will bring flair to the team but also hard work and discipline. I want to do everything I can to win, for the team and also for the fans."

Thomas Frank, who had earlier on Friday hinted that Spurs were close to landing Simons, spoke of his delight at the Dutchman’s arrival.

“I’m really pleased we have brought Xavi in - he is a great addition to the squad,” Frank said.

“He is still young, however he already has good experience and, over the past few years, has played a lot of games at the top level.

“Xavi has proven his ability to get goals and assists, both from the No10 position and left wing.

“He also has a great eye for his team-mates in terms of unlocking defences, and I know he will come in and be part of a good team that is already working hard together.”

Simons has not been registered in time to feature for Tottenham in their game against Bournemouth on Saturday - nor does he have a work permit yet - but he could be in line to make his debut against West Ham after the international break.

Standard Sport understands that Simons will be unveiled to supporters ahead of kick-off against the Cherries.
