Speaking after Bayer Leverkusen won the DFB Pokal with a 1-0 win against Kaiserslautern, Xabi Alonso gave his thoughts on Leverkusen’s season.

The win against Kaiserslautern secured a domestic double, on Leverkusen’s season, Alonso said: “The full journey and season was wonderful. What we have done this season is unbelievable. To play these games with energy and belief. I am very very proud of the team. We will always remember this in the future.” The former midfielder then added: “Our target in July was to have a good season. We had clear targets but after three/four games I was optimistic. Maybe not as big as what’s happened here. To play 53 games and only have one defeat. It is unbelievable.”

Although Leverkusen were in control for most of the game, Odilon Kossounou was sent off just before halftime for a second yellow card. On how this affected the team, Alonso said: “Being outnumbered was a challenge for us. The cooperation of the players was the key to this success. I am very grateful!”

Granit Xhaka has been one of Leverkusen’s most important players this season, and his long-range striker was the difference maker in Berlin last night. Alonso had nothing but praise for the Swiss midfielder: “Granit played a big role in this success. He was very important for us this season. That will stay in our minds: Cup win, 1-0, goal by Granit Xhaka.”

Finally, Alonso was asked if he would celebrate tonight: “Obviously” he replied.

The win against Kaiserslautern now means that Leverkusen can properly celebrate all of their achievements this season. As each achievement has been followed by an equally important game later in the week. Leverkusen will now celebrate their domestic double with a parade around the city.
