Schedules appear to be ever-expanding for the Aston Villa Women and others in the modern game. More fixtures and increased tournaments/competitions, including the international break, can give a fairly hectic year-round commitment for the players.
With the upcoming European Championships that will take place in Switzerland, there won't be too many weeks without something for fans to look forward to. Guardian reporter Tom Garry initially released the updates on X. Early Thursday morning, the Barclays Women's Super League released the dates for the upcoming 2025-2026 windows.
The WSL and Women's Championship will kick off on September 6th. The first weekend of the month will be the beginning of the campaign for Natalia Arroyo's side, as she'll look to finish the current season on a strong note and remain in the top division in England when that comes around.
Toward the end of December, the winter break will be held. Lasting approximately three weeks, the pause in the action will be on December 22nd and last until January 10th or 11th, depending on which day the fixture falls for AVWFC.
When the season concludes will then vary, as the WC will wrap up on the first weekend in May. The WSL will continue until the final match days on May 16th and 17th. With roughly a two-week difference, the eventual sides that swap places could still be in the balance well after one of the leagues has concluded play.
This is a notable adjustment in how the matches have been spread across the year. The 2024-2025 season started on Friday, September 20th, for Villa. Brighton will face Arroyo's side on May 10th for the final fixture of the year. A less condensed schedule should help the players to be at better fitness levels during the upcoming campaign. Scheduling has a lot of factors to it and can often be the luck of the draw. Spreading out the games and making it less dense during the season should help everyone, and this is an overall positive from the club-owned operations.
