Dom Hyam's reported move to North Wales has caused a stir with the Ewood Park faithful
Wrexham have made a late swoop for Blackburn Rovers defender Dom Hyam, and the reaction on social media from the Ewood faithful has been far from positive.
The Red Dragons have not enjoyed the smoothest of returns to the Championship. After an energetic summer in which Phil Parkinson oversaw twelve new additions at the Stok Cae Ras, expectations were high that the momentum of successive promotions could be carried forward.
Instead, the early weeks of the campaign have been inconsistent, with defensive vulnerabilities all too evident.
A 2-0 victory away at Millwall just before the international break brought welcome relief, marking their first win back at this level.
Hyam’s possible arrival is a timely intervention to steady a side that has not yet found its feet in the second tier.
Reports from Elliott Jackson of The Lancashire Telegraph suggest that Wrexham are on the brink of securing a deal for Hyam, with a fee believed to be in the region of £2.7 million.
This marks their third bid for the player, having seen two previous offers - each around £2 million including add-ons - rejected by Blackburn earlier in the window.
Hyam, 29, has been a dependable presence at the heart of Rovers’ defence since his arrival at Ewood Park. Last season, he played every single minute of league football, underlining his durability and consistency.
The defender is into the final year of his current deal, and while Blackburn have tabled an extension until 2027, the terms are believed to have been underwhelming, offering no significant financial uplift and effectively adding just one more year.
Watford expressed interest earlier this month, but Wrexham have been the only club to table firm offers. That determination has now forced Blackburn into a corner.
The late nature of the bid is especially problematic for Valérien Ismael’s side, who would be left with virtually no time to secure an adequate replacement.
For Blackburn fans, the potential loss of Hyam represents not just the departure of a key player but a serious misstep in club planning.
Hyam has been an ever-present, dependable leader in defence - and to lose him without reinforcements already in place has left many supporters furious.
Fans have turned to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their frustrations at the transfer, with one titling the deal “how to relegate yourself in a window by Blackburn Rovers.”
Another underlined the peril of losing their defensive leader so late in the window: “Hyam on his way and no centre back replacement is madness - big trouble for us now.”
The starkest assessment came from another supporter, who labelled the decision “actually disgraceful.”
This collective dismay stems not only from Hyam’s importance but also from the wider pattern of a window that has seen little investment in defence.
With Taylor Gardner-Hickman the only other player linked on deadline day, and no centre back cover identified, the decision to cash in on their most reliable player has bewildered the Ewood Park faithful.
With the clock ticking on the transfer window, the risk of going into the season short of defensive options looms large.
