Manchester United allowed Christian Eriksen to depart at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract.
The Dane managed five goals and six assists in all competitions last season, but his lack of pace meant Ruben Amorim felt it was time for him to be let go.
He remains a free agent, and there are plenty of interested suitors with the Denmark international making it clear that he will leave the Premier League but feels he can still play in Europe.
Surprisingly, Championship side Wrexham were eyeing a shock swoop for the former Tottenham Hotspur star and as per Sky Sports, the Welsh club have held talks with the 33-year-old.
Besiktas, Ajax, and Mallorca are just a few of the clubs to have expressed their interest in signing the free agent, and Wrexham would be a step down considering they are in the English second division.
But Christian Eriksen has been impressed with the project they have offered him, and given the ambition shown by Wrexham so far, there is no telling where they can end up.
“Wrexham have made an approach to sign Christian Eriksen. The Championship side have held talks with the Denmark international, who is a free agent after leaving Manchester United this summer.
“The 33-year-old is said to still prefer a move to a top-flight club, but has been impressed by the pitch and ambition made by Wrexham.
“The Welsh club, co-owned by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, are back in the second tier for the first time since 1982 this season and have already made six permanent signings as they continue their push from non-league to the Premier League.”
Eriksen’s representative Martin Schoots was equally impressed with what his client was offered.
“Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field. And it is a hugely impressive project, as you can see from the presence of people like Michael Williamson [Wrexham’s experienced American CEO] there.
“But Christian still wants to play in a first-tier competition and he absolutely wants to stay in Western Europe. There are some contacts going on but it has to suit both sides,” he was quoted as saying by Talksport.
Wrexham’s meteoric rise since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their takeover in 2021 has been the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters.
They have won three back-to-back promotions, climbing from Non-League football to the Championship, and if they can secure Eriksen’s signature, the English top-flight becomes a realistic target.
His passing ability remains second to none, but whether the player will agree to take a step down remains to be seen. His wage demands might also be a stumbling block.
