Joe Cole has suggested Brighton’s Danny Welbeck could have been the answer to Chelsea’s striker problems this season.
Despite investing over £1bn in the squad since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital almost three years ago, the Blues still don’t have a top striker.
Chelsea are still heavily reliant on Nicolas Jackson who’s in just his second season at the club, and a lack of an alternative has really impacted Enzo Maresca’s side this season.
Jackson has scored nine league goals this season, and has certainly shown signs of improvement, and it’s clear the Blues are a better side with him in it.
However, the 23-year-old isn’t a natural goalscorer and both he and Chelsea would benefit from having a top class striker.
Chelsea pursued Victor Osimhen for most of last summer and it’s thought he’s still on their list of options, whilst Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly another name being considered.

It’s vital Chelsea solve the centre forward issue this summer and Cole has sensationally suggest Welbeck could have solved those issues this season.
‘I’ve had discussions with people at the club and they want to get young players in, they want to buy potential and develop them.
“You can get your head around the financial model, but they also need some experience in there, two or three players, to help the younger guys and to show them the ropes,” he told TNT Sports as quoted by Metro.
“That’s the only way those younger players will reach their potential.
“Someone like Danny Welbeck,” Cole added when asked if he had anyone in mind.
“It would’ve been insane to sign him at 33 or 34, but he’s scored more goals than any Chelsea centre-forward. On the pitch, technically, it would’ve worked.

“Him as a player who has done it all, a good lad who can set the culture, that’s someone who springs off the top of my mind.”
Welbeck has eight goals in the league this season, one less than Jackson and Chelsea have had success with similar signings in the past like Olivier Giroud, Loic Remy and Demba Ba.
