Chelsea are getting started in August with a bang, deals are being closed left, right and centre.

Joao Felix is gone and a few crucial loans have been ticked off. One deal which looked like it would be one of the first to complete has ended up lagging behind, however. A couple of weeks ago, there was intense interest in Renato Veiga, with a number of top teams chasing him.

Once Atletico Madrid had made their interest known, adding to Bayern Munich and Juventus’ existing attention, it seemed like things would be wrapped up pretty quickly. We predicted the move could be done within a week. Instead, things have gone quiet.

Bayern Munich raise crucial funds to re-enter Veiga race

It may be just that there’s a bidding war going on behind the scenes – sometimes attention from multiple teams actually slows things down rather than speeds it up. But today we have a little bit of a snippet from an important source which makes it clear that there’s still action behind the scenes.

Christian Falk’s exclusive piece makes it clear that Bayern are still in the mix:

“They have an eye on players like Chelsea’s Renato Veiga; he’s also still on the list for Bayern Munich,” Falk wrote.

He points out that they sold Adam Aznou to Everton this week for €12m – “this is more Bayern can now work with.”

Atletico interest disappears – but Chelsea still in line for a major windfall

When Atletico’s interest was at it’s strongest, prices of €40m were being quoted for Veiga. However Chelsea’s “rigid” approach apparently put the Spaniards off, and they moved for David Hancko instead.

Perhaps it will be the same case with Bayern – but there’s no reason to panic either way. We’re in a strong position with Veiga, and can even loan him out to build further value if nobody offers us what we want.
