England are preparing to defend their title at Euro 2025 this summer but they face some tricky opposition in the group stage.
There is no denying that the Lionesses have a good chance of progressing far in another tournament, with Sarina Wiegman guiding her team to consecutive major finals at Euro 2022 and the World Cup in 2023.
The long-shot in England’s group is without a doubt Wales, who are contending in their first ever major tournament at this year’s Euros and are still playing catch-up to most other nations in women’s football.
Regardless of their world ranking, Wales deserve to be in the tournament just like everyone else and if anything they may have more hope than any other nation ahead of their Euros debut.
The Dragons qualified for Euro 2025 through the playoffs which ended in a nervy finish against a local rival.
Wales were able to scrape past Ireland Women 2-1 to qualify for the tournament, with goals from Hannah Cain and Carrie Jones securing history for the team.
Following their qualification, Wales haven’t had the best preparation leading up to the tournament this summer, with no joy in the Nations League where they went winless in six games.
Regardless of how they play in Switzerland, the Wales players will be etching their names into the history books and are sure to return home as legends.
The Netherlands have won one European Championship in their history and despite being drawn in arguably the hardest group they will definitely fancy their chances of going far in the tournament once again.
At Euro 2022 the Dutch finished second in the group stage to Sweden only on goal difference, but that group stage was much easier than this years.
Once they advanced from the groups the Netherlands were dumped out of the competition in the quarter-finals by a team they will face in the 2025 group stage.
There is no doubt that the Dutch will be out for revenge against France this summer after that costly defeat and the head to head could be one of the best in the early stages of the tournament.
Andries Jonker’s team endured a slightly disappointing preparation for Euro 2025, as they failed to beat Germany twice in the Nations League and even struggled up against Scotland in what was a huge upset.
Unlike the Netherlands and England, France have never advanced to the final of a European Championship and their best finish in the tournament was a third place.
That third came in 2022 and after beating the Dutch in the quarter-finals, France came up against tournament favourites in Germany and the gap in quality between teams was clear, with the Germans advancing to a final against the hosts in England.
France were able to secure the bronze medal with a win over Sweden, but the glory of a major final still continues to elude the nation’s women’s team.
One advantage France holds over the likes of England and the Netherlands in Group D this summer is the nation’s impressive preparation campaign.
In the Nations League France were simply unstoppable, winning all six of their games by an aggregate score of 14-2.
Winning all of their games booked France a spot in the Nations League semi-final against Germany, but that is well after Euro 2025 and not until October.
The Lionesses are priced as one of the tournament favourites for this summer’s Euro 2025 so it is no surprise that they are also favoured to win their group.
According to the best UK betting sites, England are 11/8 to win the group and just 4/1 to win the whole tournament.
France aren’t far behind the Lionesses in the betting at 6/4 to top Group D. The Netherlands are also given short odds of 5/2 to win in a very tough group.
Meanwhile Wales are as expected an long outsider to finish top of their group at a price of 50/1 to cause an upset on their maiden tournament.
