Who is Nico González? – The former Barcelona youngster swapping Porto for Man City | OneFootball

Arguably the biggest movement involving a Spanish club on deadline day doesn’t even involve a La Liga club selling or buying someone.

Barcelona are set to receive €24 million for the sale of midfielder Nico González from Porto to Manchester City, as the 23-year-old is a graduate of La Masia and had a sell-on clause when he left the club.

Who is Nicolás González though? The young Spaniard spent 10 years on the books at Barcelona before moving to Porto in 2023, making 37 senior appearances for Barça in that time.

Since then he has made 68 appearances across two seasons for Porto, during which he has caught the attention of Man City boss Pep Guardiola, leading to a €60 million move.

González can play anywhere across the midfield, having played in a defensive role as well as further up the pitch in a more attacking one.

This versatility will be very useful for Man City, as they have struggled to adapt to the loss of Rodri due to injury and the drop in form of Kevin De Bruyne.

Barcelona fans may wonder what might have been when they see their former youngster lining up in the North of England in the coming months.
