The Europa League semi-finals begin this evening as Tottenham Hotspur, Bodo/Glimt, Athletic Bilbao and Manchester United compete for the trophy.

Those four teams have won this competition just three times previously combined, with only one of those successes coming this century. Athletic Bilbao and Bodo/Glimt are both seeking to become first-time winners.

Ahead of the semi-finals, we’ve ranked the five teams with the most UEFA Cup/Europa League titles.

Atletico Madrid – 3 (2010, 2012, and 2018)

Spanish sides have dominated this competition since the turn of the century with 12 successes since 2000 alone. Three of those triumphs belong to Atletico Madrid, who claimed the Europa League in 2010, 2012 and 2018.

The Rojiblancos won the competition for the first time after an extra-time win over Fulham. Diego Forlan scored both goals in the first final after the competition was rebranded from the UEFA Cup to the Europa League.

Two years later, Radamel Falcao scored twice as Atletico beat Spanish rivals Athletic Bilbao in Bucharest. The Colombian centre-forward had scored the winner in the previous year’s final for FC Porto, becoming the first player to win Europa League titles with different teams.

Atletico added a third Europa League title in 2018, thrashing Marseille 3-0 in the decider.

Juventus – 3 (1977, 1990, and 1993)

Juventus are three-time winners of the competition but it has been 32 years since the Bianconeri’s last triumph. Their first success came in 1977, following a two-legged final win over Athletic Bilbao. Despite defeat in the second leg, Juventus lifted the trophy on the away goals ruling.

In 1990, Juventus beat domestic rivals Fiorentina 3-1 on aggregate to claim a second title. The Turin side then thrashed Borussia Dortmund in 1993, winning 6-1 over two legs with Roberto Baggio and Dino Baggio combining for five goals

Inter Milan – 3 (1991, 1994 and 1998)

Inter Milan have also claimed three titles with each of the club’s successes coming during Serie A’s golden era in the nineties.

Serie A sides won six out of seven Europa League titles between 1989 and 1995, with Inter victorious after beating Roma (1991) and Austria Salzburg (1994).

The Nerazzurri won the competition for a third time as a Ronaldo Nazario-inspired side beat Lazio 3-0 at the Parc des Princes. That 1998 clash was the first final held over one leg.

Liverpool – 3 (1973, 1976 and 2001)

Liverpool have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League three times.

The Reds won the second edition of the tournament in 1973, after edging past Borussia Monchengladbach. Kevin Keegan scored twice in a 3-0 first-leg win before Liverpool were forced to hold on after a 2-0 defeat in Germany.

Liverpool beat Club Brugge 4-3 on aggregate three years later. The Merseysiders trailed 2-0 inside 15 minutes of the home leg but fought back after half-time to prevail 3-2 on the night. A draw in the second leg sealed a second title.

Remarkably, Liverpool would later beat both teams in European Cup finals, defeating Monchengladbach (1977) and Club Brugge (1978) to win back-to-back crowns.

Liverpool’s third success came in 2000/01, as Gerard Houllier led the side to a UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup treble.

A thrilling final saw Liverpool win 5-4 against Deportivo Alaves, courtesy of an extra-time own goal from Delfi Geli. Liverpool won via the now-defunct Golden Goal rule.

Sevilla – 7 (2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020, and 2023)

Sevilla have been the dominant force in this competition with the Spanish side claiming seven titles.

The Andaluscians thrashed Middlesbrough 4-0 to win their first crown in 2006, before defending the trophy by beating Espanyol on penalties a year later.

Sevilla went one better between 2014 and 2016 with a three-peat of Europa League titles. No other side has ever won three consecutive titles in the competition.

Sevilla added further crowns in 2020 and 2023, extending their record as the most successful side in Europa League history.
