It was two winters ago that the Los Angeles Galaxy made a major splash in the offseason. They brought over veteran keeper John McCarthy from LAFC to take over for Jonathan Bond.
The LA Galaxy also added players like Miki Yamane, Emiro Garces, and Ghana-native Joseph Paintsil. With Riqui Puig and Dejan Joveljic already on the roster, what more could you ask for?
For a $10 million transfer fee, apparently the LA Galaxy wanted more. They asked for Gabriel Pec from Vasco da Gama, a top-flight Brazilian side soccer club.
"Gabriel has been a key contributor for one of the biggest clubs in Brazil’s Série A and we are beyond excited that he is choosing to join the Galaxy as the next step in his burgeoning career. In addition to his work rate and attacking prowess, he will also be bringing the experience of representing his native Brazil in the qualification tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics when he joins our group. We are thrilled to announce Gabriel as the newest member of the LA Galaxy."Will Kuntz, GM of the LA Galaxy
Last season, Pec was named Major League Soccer's Newcomer of the Year. He was involved in 30 of the LA Galaxy's scores (16 goals and 14 assists) during the 2024 MLS regular season.
On January 30, 2024, the Los Angeles Galaxy made the announcement on their team site "that the club has acquired Gabriel Pec from Brazilian Série A side Vasco da Gama as a Young Designated Player and signed the forward to a five-year contract through the end of the 2028 MLS season. Pec, who will occupy an international roster slot, will be added to the Galaxy roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa."
So far, he only has three goals and three assists this season. Coincidentally, that's exactly how much he had in the playoffs last year for his team.
This is not the first time that Palmeiras has coveted their fellow-Brazilian. A week ago, TotalLAGalaxy took to Instagram to report that "Brazilian Club, Palmeiras are once again interested in Gabriel Pec. In addition to Ramon Sosa, who they already have negotiations with, Palmeiras has asked about the conditions of Gabriel Pec. Palmeiras wants two wingers for the next season. Gabriel Pec is a long-standing dream of the committee and board."
It is likely Pec will stay. However, they have already seen one of his teammates be transferred this year. Axel Essengue went to Phoenix Rising FC two months ago in a deal.
At this rate, the LA Galaxy are closer to having a top spot in the MLS SuperDraft in December instead of this postseason tournament.
With that being said, the Los Angeles Galaxy should only make this deal if they can make more than the $10 million transfer fee back. For a deal that they lose money or break even is not appealing to their fan base or future finances for the team.
The LA Galaxy is 2-2-1 in their last five games. They play a lowly D.C. United team at home on Saturday. If the six-time MLS Cup winners look to turn their season around, now is the time with only 12 more regular season games left after this weekend.
