Following Manchester City’s 8-nil win over Salford City in their FA Cup third-round tie at the Etihad Stadium yesterday Pep Guardiola revealed that Kyle Walker is considering his future at the club. Eyebrows were raised when Walker was omitted from City’s match day squad for yesterday’s match. But following Guardiola’s post-game revelation the situation became clear. But whatever happens with Walker this month he deserves respect for all that he has done at Manchester City.
There is no doubt that this season has been a battle for Kyle Walker. He has struggled this season as his form hasn’t been what we have become accustomed to seeing from the England international. Walker’s race with Father Time is one he doesn’t seem to be winning. For once in his career his pace can’t get him out of this one. It has been sad to see Walker’s decline this season. Perhaps now is the best time for Manchester City and Walker to part ways. But the final months of his City career aren’t what he should be remembered for.
Across his time at Manchester City Kyle Walker has been an integral player in Pep Guardiola’s side. He has helped City claim 17 major trophies since he arrived at the club. 6 Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and Carabao Cup winner’s medals all sit on Kyle Walker’s mantle piece. During his time at the Etihad, he has arguably become the greatest right-back in Premier League history. That’s Kyle Walker’s legacy at Manchester City and it’s what he should be remembered for.
Pep Guardiola said it best when speaking about Kyle Walker’s contribution to Manchester City’s success yesterday. When speaking about Walker he said: “We cannot understand the success we’ve had these years without Kyle. It’s impossible. He arrived eight years ago with us and we start to win, win, win, win and he has been important for the national team and of course with our team.”
Kyle Walker has been an immense contributor to Manchester City’s era of dominance. For that, he should be treated with respect as his time at the club appears to be drawing to a close. That shouldn’t be forgotten as we wait to see whether or not he will remain at the club this month.
