The last non-league team left standing in the FA Cup Third Round, Dagenham & Redbridge travel southwest to the Isle of Dogs to face the Championship side Millwall F.C. on Monday, January 13th. This was to be the last fixture of the third round until weather postponed three other matches. Let’s learn more about this National League side.

A History of Union

  • Dagenham & Redbridge was formed after the merger of two clubs: Dagenham and Redbridge Forest.
  • The latter traces its history back to 1881, when the amateur clubs Ilford FC, Leytonstone and Walthamstow Avenue combined to form a single outfit.
  • The club’s home kit features red and blue hoops, red sleeves and blue shorts and socks.
  • Their home stadium, Victoria Road, is located in the eastern part of Greater London.
  • Their nickname is The Daggers, and the club is frequently abbreviated Dag & Red.

Performance

  • Since their merger, the club has spent time in the League Two (tier 4) and National League (tier 5).
  • In 2009-10 they won promotion into League One (tier 3) through the playoffs, but were relegated the next year after finishing 21st.
  • Their FA Cup run started with fourth qualifying round 5-1 smashing of Leiston (7th tier), first round 1-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra (League Two) and a second round 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon (League Two). Ironically, this same Wimbledon match-up back in Nov. 26, 2013 was the subject of a failed match-fixing plot by two Singaporean businessmen.

More Facts

  • Their current owner, Club Underdog, also owns soccer clubs in Italy (Campobasso and Ascoli), Switzerland (FC Locarno) and the United States (Brooklyn FC).
  • The club has no manager. Previous gaffer Ben Strevens was sacked on Boxing Day. Their caretaker manager is Lewis Young, younger brother of Everton’s Ashley Young and uncle of Peterborough United midfielder Tyler Young.
