Middlesbrough are on the verge of completing a blockbuster deal for Manchester City youngster Sverre Nypan.

Boro obviously have a good relationship with Pep Guardiola's side as it is set to be the third summer in a row where they have signed one of the former Premier League champions' rising stars.

Morgan Rogers arrived on a permanent deal from the Citizens in July 2023 for £1.5 million. His move to the Riverside was emulated by his former City teammate Micah Hamilton a year later. He also signed a multi-year deal with Boro. Now it is the turn of Nypan, the Norwegian 18-year-old that clubs across Europe were clambering for over the summer.

The centre-mid ended up joining Man City as part of a £12.5 million move, but they wanted him to head out on loan to continue his development. It was revealed by Fabrizio Romano on Thursday evening that Boro would be Nypan's landing spot.

While a deal for the teenage prospect is not complete, it is very close to being finalised. Nypan would be Rob Edwards' fifth signing since taking over from Michael Carrick in the summer.

He's a player that Boro looked at last summer, according to the Northern Echo, but the high-profile interest in him from top clubs across Europe dissuaded them from making any move for the ex-Rosenborg midfielder.

The Norway youth international had already made 70 first-team appearances for his old club before moving to City last month. Playing predominantly as a left-sided centre-mid, the right-footer racked up 25 combined goals and assists in those games for Rosenborg.

Middlesbrough have every reason to be buzzing with their Man City business

Man City's director of football, Hugo Viana, spoke glowingly of Nypan after his arrival at the Etihad Stadium. "Sverre is an exciting young player that the club has been monitoring for quite some time now," said Viana.

"We feel that he already has numerous standout qualities but that at only 18 years of age, he is only going to continue to improve.

"We believe he will be an important asset for Manchester City in the years to come and we will support him every step of the way in his development."

City have had one of the best academies in the country, and, arguably, in the world, of late. Any emerging talent that they deem good enough to pay £12.5 million for is someone that Boro fans should be really excited by.

The centre of the park is an area of the pitch that Edwards has a lot of options in, so there won't be any immediate pressure on the youngster to come straight into the first XI and make a difference. It can't, though, be lost among that just how huge of a talent Boro are about to have their hands on.
