On this day in 1962, Guadalajara transcended its greatness beyond the borders of our country, adding its first CONCACAF Champions Cup to its trophy case.
Chivas has lifted this trophy twice: in 1962 and in 2018. That first championship in '62 not only meant Guadalajara's first international title, but also the beginning of its greatness outside of Mexico, and here we share the best facts about that great moment.
-At that time, the Rebaño dominated Mexican soccer, having just won its fourth consecutive league title and fifth overall.
-To reach the final, Guadalajara defeated Herediano of Costa Rica with a resounding 5-0 aggregate score.
-In the final, the opponent was Comunicaciones of Guatemala, which had eliminated Sithoc of the Netherlands Antilles by a 3-1 aggregate score.
-In the first leg, played in Guatemala City, the Rebaño won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Javier 'Cabo' Valdivia. The second leg, held at the Jalisco Stadium, was a real Rojiblanca party, as Chivas won by a resounding 5-0. Salvador Reyes scored a hat trick in the 25th, 57th, and 88th minutes, and 'Bigotón' Jasso scored twice in the 42nd and 67th minutes.
