Danny Hylton has revealed his delight after he was named as part of Nathan Jones' backroom team at Charlton Athletic.
Danny Hylton has revealed his delight at stepping up to be part of Nathan Jones’ coaching staff at Charlton Athletic.
The 36-year-old announced that he had retired from playing in the week, with his career having begun with non-league Aldershot, to reaching the Championship with Luton, before he ended by helping the Addicks to promotion in the 2024/25 season.
However, Hylton’s game time was very limited, with the striker having joined as a player-coach initially, before extending his contract in that capacity in February, so he knew he wasn’t going to be a regular every week in the XI.
Hylton was always primed to take on a full-time coaching role, as he clearly had plans to remain in the game after he had stopped playing.
And that’s exactly what has happened, as Charlton confirmed he will be part of Jones’ backroom team moving forward as they prepare for life in the second tier.
That was shared with supporters on social media on Thursday afternoon, with Hylton reacting to the news with a message that revealed his happiness at his role.
“Over the moon to join Nathan and his staff and continue at this great club.”
This is a no-brainer for Charlton and Jones, as Hylton has clearly been a valuable addition over the past year as a player-coach, so it makes sense that they look to keep him involved now he has retired.
The players know and respect Hylton, along with the manager, with the duo going back a long way, considering Hylton played for the Addicks chief during his two spells at Luton Town, where the Hatters took major strides forward as a club.
That means there will be a level of trust there, and Hylton knows exactly what Jones wants from his team. And, it’s worth reiterating that he has been part of the setup that already brought success to Charlton last season.
So, all Hylton’s focus will be on helping the players when they return for pre-season, as it’s going to be a real challenge for the Londoners back in the second tier, but there will be a belief that with Jones in charge, they will be able to kick-on next season, and in the years to come.
