There were murmurs of Arsenal sporting director Edu wanting to leave the club shortly after Vinai Venkatesham left, according to Con Harrison.
The scout and Gunners insider, who has been featured on the BBC and The Overlap and is followed by the likes of Ben Jacobs, Jacob Steinberg and Darren Lewis on X (formerly Twitter), claimed on the social media platform this morning that Edu wanted to be considered for the CEO role.
While he was not upset he did not get it, he was more annoyed that Arsenal executive vice-chair Tim Lewis did not really consider him for the role.
Richard Garlick succeeded Vinai in the summer of 2024 after spending three years as director of football operations, and it appears Edu was not pleased he was not considered for the job.
The former Arsenal midfielder returned to the North London club to become their first-ever technical director in July 2019 before becoming their first-ever sporting director in November 2022.
He is now reportedly set to leave the club, with the Daily Mail claiming that there may have been a reshuffle in responsibilities among the Arsenal hierarchy in key positions.
The Gunners brought back their former executive James King last month as their new director of football operations, and we at Gooner Talk reckon he could be in the running for the sporting director role.
Edu has been linked with an interest in a role with the group of clubs belonging to Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.
He will be hugely missed at Arsenal given how he has helped turn them into regular title challengers in the Premier League in recent seasons, and the Gunners have to get their next appointment right.
