Birmingham City earned a 3-1 win over potential promotion rivals Wrexham on Monday evening
Tomoki Iwata has issued a message to supporters following Birmingham City’s 3-1 win over Wrexham.
Iwata ensured all three points stayed at St. Andrew’s, adding a third after a Jay Stansfield brace had put the hosts in front.
Jack Marriott opened the scoring for the Red Dragons in just the third minute in what was a hotly-anticipated clash.
But Chris Davies’ side turned things around, equalising in the 22nd minute before taking the lead at the start of the second 45.
Iwata bagged his first goal for the club as he made his debut, having signed from Celtic on transfer deadline day.
Iwata has thanked the fans for their support in his debut game for the club on social media, hailing Birmingham after a warm welcome.
He also dedicated his goal to his two-year-old son, who celebrated his birthday on 15 September.
“Thank you to all the fans,” wrote Iwata, via Instagram.
“What a club.
“And yesterday, my goal was a present for my son.
“He turned two on the 15th.
“Happy birthday my son.”
Birmingham and Wrexham’s meeting has been dubbed the ‘Hollywood derby’ due to the famous names both linked with the respective clubs.
Former NFL quarterback Tom Brady was in attendance at St. Andrew’s, and is a minority investor in the Midlands outfit.
Meanwhile, Wrexham’s rise to League One has come under the co-ownership of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, with the latter also at the game on Monday evening.
David Beckham was also spotted in the crowd alongside Brady, adding to the growing list of famous name to attend EFL games in recent years.
Birmingham and Wrexham will both be aiming to fight for promotion to the Championship this year, with the Blues having suffered relegation from the second tier last season.
Birmingham moved into second place as a result of their 3-1 victory over Phil Parkinson’s side on Monday night, putting them into an automatic promotion place.
Only goal difference separates the two clubs at this early stage of the campaign, with Wrexham holding onto top spot despite the loss.
However, the Welsh outfit have played a game more than their rivals, with table position still not that important at this early stage of the term.
Wrexham next face Crawley Town at home on Saturday, while Davies’ team travel to face Rotherham United, with both games getting underway at 3pm.
Iwata couldn’t have asked for a better start to life at Birmingham, bagging a big first goal for the club in a top of the table clash to seal all three points.
He will be hoping that this is just the start of a fruitful stint in his career, having struggled for consistent game time during his two years in Scotland.
The 27-year-old will have his sights set on helping the Blues gain promotion to the Championship this season, but getting off the mark will also be a special moment for him.
That he could dedicate it to his young son is also a touching moment, and one he likely won’t forget anytime soon.
