Chelsea stormed to their first victory of the new Premier League campaign with a resounding 5-1 win at West Ham United, as João Pedro delivered a dazzling display in East London.
Despite Lucas Paquetá’s stunning opener for The Hammers, the visitors struck three times before half-time and added two more after the interval to leave Graham Potter’s side humbled.
West Ham made the perfect start when Lucas Paquetá dispossessed Estevão and unleashed a thunderous strike from distance into the top corner after just six minutes. But Chelsea responded swiftly: Marc Cucurella flicked on a corner for João Pedro to head home the equaliser in the 15th minute.
The Brazilian forward then turned provider eight minutes later, cutting the ball across goal for Pedro Neto to volley beyond Mads Hermansen and put Chelsea ahead. With the hosts reeling, Estevão showcased his talent on the right flank, bursting to the byline before squaring for Enzo Fernández to finish from close range on 34 minutes, giving The Blues a 3-1 lead at the break.
After half-time, Chelsea’s dominance only grew. A mishandled corner by Hermansen allowed Moisés Caicedo to scramble the ball in on 55 minutes, before another set-piece three minutes later saw João Pedro tee up Trevoh Chalobah for the fifth. By then, large sections of the London Stadium were already emptying as West Ham supporters voiced their frustration.
Chelsea controlled proceedings thereafter, comfortably seeing out the game while the home side struggled to muster any meaningful response.
