After losing six of their last seven competitive fixtures and conceding 19 goals along the way, Werder Bremen suddenly had some success to discuss on Saturday afternoon. Two stunning goals from Ole Werner’s Hanseaten to beat Holstein Kiel 0-3 away. After the match, two Werder players were left debating whether it was Marvin Ducksch or Felix Agu who had scored the better goal.
Squad captain Marco Friedl – back leading from the starting XI for the first time since matchday 20 – wasn’t sure whether it was Ducksch’s 28th-minute tight-angle set-piece effort from near the left corner flag or Felix Agu’s curling 59th-minute shot from 20 metres out that was more difficult. Friedl admitted he had already gone back and forth while speaking in the mixed zone.
“I’ve already been asked that,” Friedl said. “I said Duckschi before, now I’m saying Felix. I didn’t know that Felix could shoot like that. You have to say it: both goals were beautiful. But Duckschis was phenomenal.“
Ducksch himself had to walk back a few words when making his own mixed zone comments. After all, Ducksch’s first goal since the matchday 19 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund wasn’t exactly a case to brag about. Ducksch missed a penalty the very next week. His form unquestionably contributed to Bremen’s recent slump.
“Felix’s trajectory looked very nice, but – in terms of the angle – mine was a bit more difficult,” Ducksch said, adding that he kept his post-goal celebrations muted for a reason, “but it’s easier for me to talk less and do more [right now]. I’ve sometimes been too negative [to my teammates] without meaning much harm.
“We can debate which goal was better,” Ducksch concluded. “but I’d rather keep my mouth shut and perform better.“
