Whilst Paris Saint-Germain eased past FC Metz in their final Ligue 1 fixture of the 2023/24 season, Kylian Mbappé (25) was nowhere to be seen. The Frenchman has been used sparingly in the league in recent months, ever since he announced his upcoming departure to Nasser Al-Khelaifi in February. That departure became official earlier this month.
Mbappé played his final game at the Parc des Princes last weekend, netting PSG’s only goal in a 3-1 defeat against Toulouse FC. However, he was left out of the matchday squad entirely against Metz, with the Coupe de France final against Olympique Lyonnais this coming weekend in mind.
The France captain profited from his omission to take a trip to attend the Cannes Film Festival, alongside teammate Ousmane Dembélé. It is a decision that garnered considerable attention. In the wake of PSG’s 2-0 win over Metz on Sunday evening, Luis Enrique responded. “I count on all of my players, as I have throughout the season. It is a great week, some players have played, others have not,” began the Spaniard.
He added, “This week, we will see who is ready, who isn’t and who wants it more. The Coupe de France is very important for us.” Mbappé, who also missed the midweek trip to face OGC Nice with a minor injury, could perhaps have already played his final game for Les Parisiens, should Luis Enrique interpret the Frenchman’s séjour on the Riviera as a lack of “desire”. At the very least, Mbappé’s participation in the Coupe de France final in Lille on Saturday is now in doubt.
