Leeds United manager Daniel Farke will have been pleased with his side’s performance against Everton on the opening weekend of the Premier League, as they caused significant problems for their opponents. The club aim to establish itself in the top flight for the long term, a challenging task, but one they believe is achievable.
While Leeds demonstrated their quality in the Championship over recent months, they are aware that the Premier League represents a higher level of competition. Newly promoted sides often adopt a defensive approach, particularly against established top-tier teams. However, Farke’s side intends to maintain their style, even when facing formidable opponents such as Arsenal, whom they meet today in the league. The Gunners are widely regarded as one of the favourites for the title, and expectations are that they will overcome Leeds. Despite this, the Yorkshire club are unlikely to alter its approach, regardless of the strength of the opposition.
Farke has emphasised that his team will not compromise their playing philosophy in order to survive against stronger sides. Speaking to Arsenal Media, he said:
“We won’t sell out our DNA and park the bus. If you just try to defend, you have no chance to survive. We will try to be there with many periods with the ball, and try and create chances to scare them. There will be periods where we suffer and we have to be well structured.
“It’s our biggest test so far, we have also proven in the first game and also pre-season when we’ve faced sides like AC Milan or Man United or Villareal that we are competitive.”
Leeds’ commitment to their style means they will look to maintain possession and create opportunities rather than simply sit back. Farke’s philosophy focuses on balance, ensuring that the team is structured while also remaining proactive in attack.

Although the Gunners are expected to secure victory, Leeds will present difficulties through their persistence and organisation. The match will test Arsenal’s resilience and ability to break down a determined opponent, but Leeds are unlikely to compromise their principles for defensive safety. For supporters, the encounter promises an engaging contest, with Leeds aiming to prove they can compete effectively in the Premier League without abandoning the style that brought them success in the Championship.
