After his departure from Brighton, many clubs were interested in appointing Roberto De Zerbi due to his impressive spell in charge of the Premier League club. Marseille were able to pull off the ambitious swoop to make him the club’s manager. In an interview with Zeta, the former Sassuolo boss has laid out his plans whilst in charge of Les Phocéens.

The former Brighton manager has signed a three-year contract which will see him patrol the dugout at the Stade Vélodrome until 2027.  Marseille had a torrid time last season as the club went through three managers throughout the Ligue 1 season – Marcelino, Gennaro Gattuso and Jean-Louis Gasset.

Turmoil from last season means that De Zerbi has lots of work to do to help OM return to their former glories as one of the most successful teams in France. Marseille will be without European football next season after finishing 7th in Ligue 1 last season and failing to qualify for continental competition. Returning Les Olympiens to European competition will be one of the first tasks on the newly-appointed manager’s agenda.

Speaking to Zeta, the Italian manager outlined his plans as Marseille coach, “The people of Marseille define OM as the most important club in the country, but we need to bring back enthusiasm and challenge the dominance of Paris Saint Germain.” He added, “I will tell the players that we must make the fans proud. Coaching Marseille is unique, you have people behind you. With seriousness and courage, I will try to bring them back to Europe.”
