An 8th-minute goal from Rami Al Hajj put the Pilgrims in front before Ibrahim Cissoko doubled their lead in the second half.

Cissoko completed a brace in stoppage time to secure all three points after Victor Moses had pulled one back immediately after going 2-0 down.

The win is Plymouth’s second in three games and leaves them with eight points from their opening seven fixtures.

The victory should ease some of the pressure on Rooney, who failed to win any of his first four league games in charge before earning six points from the last nine, having also beaten Sunderland.

Rooney has shown his gratitude to the home fans for their support on Friday night, praising the level of atmosphere they delivered to Home Park.

He will be hoping for more of that throughout the campaign, as they look to avoid any kind of relegation battle this year.

“Some atmosphere at last night,” wrote Rooney, via Instagram.

“Thanks for all your support.”

Rooney’s appointment was met with intense scrutiny due to the nature of his previous managerial stint at Birmingham City.

The 38-year-old lasted just 15 games in charge, winning just twice and Blues ultimately suffered relegation at the end of that campaign.

But he has already overseen more wins for the Pilgrims than he did at St. Andrew’s, with this latest victory moving the team up to 13th before the rest of the weekend’s action takes place.

Plymouth finished 21st in the Championship last season, so will be looking to improve on that result in their second year back in the second division.

If the team can keep up this recent form then that remains a distinct possibility.

Plymouth Argyle’s start to the season

Plymouth lost their opening game of the campaign 4-0 at Hillsborough and had to wait until 14 September before earning their first victory of the campaign.

A 3-2 home win over then-league leaders Sunderland got Rooney off the mark and a second victory in front of their own supporters has opened up a gap to the bottom three.

Next up for Plymouth is an away trip midweek to Burnley, with kick-off at Turf Moor set for 7.45pm.

The Pilgrims are still chasing their first away win of the season, having earned one point from nine on the road so far.

Rooney needed Luton win this week

Given ex-Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher is now back on the managerial market, Rooney needed a win to ease any pressure over his position.

There could be some temptation there for the club to go back to Schumacher after the success he brought to the team, guiding them to promotion in 2023.

But if Rooney can keep bringing good results, especially at home, then there will be no worry about his position.
