Urawa Reds secured a vital 2-1 victory over Kyoto Sanga at Saitama Stadium 2002 on Wednesday evening, strengthening their position near the top of the J1 League table.
Yusuke Matsuo put the home side ahead after 24 minutes before Rafael Elias levelled for Kyoto ten minutes into the second half. Ryoma Watanabe restored Urawa's lead just six minutes later with what proved to be the decisive goal.
The hosts started brightly and were rewarded when Matsuo broke the deadlock midway through the first half. Kyoto responded well after the break, with Hidehiro Sugai providing the assist for Rafael Elias to equalise in the 55th minute.
Urawa's response was swift and effective. Samuel Gustafson turned provider in the 61st minute, setting up Watanabe for what would ultimately be the winning goal.
Despite Kyoto enjoying greater possession (56% compared to Urawa's 44%) and completing more passes (341 successful passes at 76% accuracy versus Urawa's 251 at 71%), it was Urawa who created the more dangerous opportunities.
The home side registered 14 shots to Kyoto's seven, with five on target from each team. Maciej Skorża's men showed greater cutting edge in the final third, turning fewer touches into more meaningful chances.
Kyoto's possession-based approach under Cho Kwi-Jae looked promising at times, but they struggled to convert their territorial advantage into clear-cut opportunities, particularly after drawing level.
Ryoma Watanabe was instrumental for Urawa, scoring the winner and creating two key passes in a performance rated at 7.7. Yusuke Matsuo also impressed with his goal and three successful dribbles, earning a 7.6 rating.
For the visitors, Rafael Elias was the standout performer with a rating of 8.3, scoring their only goal and winning all his duels. Hidehiro Sugai contributed both defensively with five tackles and offensively with the assist for Elias's goal.
The victory marks Urawa's second consecutive win as they continue to push for the upper reaches of the table. Watanabe, who recently announced his engagement to model Kimi Maeda, expressed the team's determination: "To move up the table, we need to keep winning."
Matheus Sávio, one of Urawa's January signings from Kashiwa Reysol, praised the club's supporters, calling them "the best in Japan" and showing enthusiasm about potential Club World Cup participation.
For Kyoto, the defeat ends their hopes of moving to the top of the J1 League, at least temporarily, and extends their winless run to six matches.
Both teams have been active in the transfer market this season, with multiple new signings featuring prominently in this fixture. The integration of these players will be crucial as both sides navigate the competitive J1 League landscape, where the top eight teams are separated by just three points.
