With the founding of the BVB World of Health, Borussia Dortmund and the Essen University Medical Centre are opening a new chapter. The Medical Centre, which is planned to cover a 7,400 square metre area within walking distance of the BVB training centre, will comprise the disciplines of sports medicine, orthopaedics, cardiology and radiology. The practice will span some 5,000 square metres, and will be specifically geared toward the needs of professional and recreational athletes, as well as people with an active and health-conscious lifestyle – and will also be dedicated to research.

A special focus is on the combination of sports medicine and artificial intelligence: The renowned Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM) of the Essen University Medical Centre will be heavily involved in the development of the BVB World of Health. A comprehensive range of services is planned that combines diagnostics, prediction, prevention, acute treatment and rehabilitation at the highest level. In the BVB World of Health, Borussia Dortmund's teams will also receive medical care – with the clear aspiration of setting new standards in sports medicine.

Further details – such as the start of construction, the planned completion date and the specific offerings that will be available at the BVB World of Health – will be announced at a later date. Currently, the opening is scheduled for 2027 at the earliest.

Carsten Cramer (managing director, Borussia Dortmund): "The development of a joint sports medicine centre with the renowned Essen University Medical Centre is an exciting, innovative project that we have been pushing forward intensively over the past few months. It will go far beyond the care of our first team and be part of a modern, responsible healthcare system."

Thomas Tress (managing director, Borussia Dortmund): "The BVB World of Health will combine cutting-edge medicine with economic farsightedness. We are creating an infrastructure that is designed to provide medical care for sporting success as well as possible and to establish a sustainable business model for the general public. Health is a key topic for the future – we are creating added value for athletes and patients of all kinds."

Lars Ricken (managing director of sport, Borussia Dortmund): "The health and availability of our players is a key factor in the success of professional football. Through the BVB World of Health, we are creating an institution that combines medical care, sports science findings, research and individual care at the highest level – directly at our training centre in cooperation with the medical staff of the entire club."

Bärbel Bergerhoff-Wodopia (chairman of the supervisory board of the Essen University Medical Centre): "Our partnership will be a model – for a region in the process of transition and for a modern health system. I supported the goal from the beginning: First of all, to raise the medical care of professionals to a new level and, in the second step, to improve the health care of the people in the region, who then have access to AI-based prevention and rehabilitation via the BVB World of Health."

Prof. Dr. Jochen A. Werner (medical director and CEO of the Essen University Medical Centre): "The Essen University Medical Centre sees this cooperation as a model for the future: A 'smart hospital' on the playing field of care – practical and with clear benefits for (professional) athletes and, prospectively, all other patients. Together, we want to show how digitalisation and artificial intelligence are not simply buzzwords, but can actually streamline processes and specifically improve health care."
