(Video): Two of Enzo Maresca’s decisions contribute to pathetic defending as Chelsea concede

This season has had some good moments – but by God it’s had some infuriating ones too.

We’ve just had the latest one. Chelsea had absolutely dominated the opening 20 minutes of this game, and it felt a matter of time before the Blues scored. But as we’ve seen so often this season, some dreadful casual defensive play has allowed an easy opposition goal. This has turned what could have been a cruise into potentially a real slog – or even a disaster.

The Blues lost the ball while Marc Cucurella was doing his usual central midfield act. This meant the left of Chelsea’s defence was totally open for the opposition to run into. By the time Cucurella was back to try and block the cross, Ipswich were already in our box. The ball across made it past the Spaniard, yet should still have easily been dealt with.

Robert Sanchez froze on his line, and Julio Enciso somehow ghosted in between Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo without a challenge going in, before toe poking the ball in.

You can see the goal in the clips embedded here:

Chelsea’s endless defensive changes leads to endless defensive problems

Cucurella going into midfield has its benefits, but it also has this weakness too. This is Ipswich we’re talking about – imagine how much we could be in trouble against a good team with good players built to attack us.

We wrote ahead of the game about how much we hated the endless changing of central defenders by Enzo Maresca – well today we saw a perfect example of why. A lack of consistency has meant a lack of understanding, leading to goals like this. Must do better.
