Manchester United have finally ended their goal drought at Anfield by taking a well-deserved lead against Liverpool thanks to a close-range rocket from Lisandro Martinez.
The Red Devils made the trip to Merseyside with their morale at an all-time low after suffering three straight league defeats in a row that left them in a miserable 14th place in the table. Therefore, none of their supporters felt too optimistic about their chances against their old rivals who have emerged as the runaway Premier League leaders.
And yet, Ruben Amorim’s men displayed encouraging signs in the first half, coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions through Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund while looking composed at the back for once.
But while the first half ended goalless, the visitors stunned Anfield by taking the lead through an unlikely goalscorer in the shape of Martinez. The Argentine defender played a give-and-go with his captain Bruno Fernandes who put him through on goal with a brilliant no-look pass. The World Cup winner found himself in front of Alisson, and while the angle was acute, he applied power to beat the Brazilian with a smashing strike that bounced in off the woodwork and into the goal.
Therefore, United have finally managed to score a goal at Anfield, as their most recent strike at the home of the Kop dates back to December 2018 when Jesse Lingard scored the 1-1 equaliser in a game that ended 3-1 in favour of the hosts have been utterly dominant on their ground ever since.
Although Liverpool have now equalized through Cody Cadko, United will be hoping to emerge with a positive result from Anfield for a change.
Update: Mo Salah has now given Liverpool the lead, so Man United could be looking at another defeat.
