Chelsea look to have sealed the signing of Liam Delap, ending their 12 month search for a player to compete with and complement Nicolas Jackson up front.

It’s great to get the deal done early – he can join up with the squad for the Club World Cup in a couple of weeks- but according to a very good source, this doesn’t mean the end of Chelsea’s striker demands.

Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph was on the London is Blue podcast today, where he spoke about the club’s desire to potentially add a second striker in this window.

“Certainly I think it’s a possibility…. they’ll be very concerned about how it could all have gone horribly wrong the way the striker department was set up last summer, and they will definitely react to that. So I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they end up signing two. Ekitike they definitely like…

You can see Law’s comments in the clip embedded here, with these quotes coming after 15 minutes:

Chelsea’s finances make second deal hard – but not impossible

We’re not quite sure what to make of this chatter just yet. It wouldn’t surprise us if they did go for a third striker, but financially it’s a little dodgy. The names being mentioned (Ekitike, Victor Osimhen, Vikor Gyokeres and co.) are universally going to cost huge money and wages.

With Delap sorted and new signings expected on the wing and in defence, it looks a stretch to get another forward too. As ever, it will largely come down to what kind of sales we can make in the next few weeks.

As Law also mentions, there’s the question of how a second signing affects Jackson too. There are plenty of games to go around for 2 players up front, but nobody will want to be third choice.
