Liverpool may have changed up their midfield a little for yesterday’s game against us at Stamford Bridge, but it was still a very strong Reds side with a lot of attacking firepower.

The Blues scored early, and while it was vital they added another goal, the game plan really changed because of that lead from the second minute. Enzo Maresca admitted after the game that his preparation for how the match would go was almost useless because of his team’s unexpected early advantage.

Chelsea’s strong defence at home allows them to protect early lead

Chelsea were able to settle into a more defensive stance, striking on the counter attack, while Arne Slot’s men dominated possession. That put the pressure on our defence, but they stood up magnificently. For all the dominance that Liverpool had, we never really felt that under pressure.

Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella controlled the wide areas well, while Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill were excellent at the back for Chelsea. Both put in some huge challenges to keep the Reds at bay. Chalobah in particular was at his best, defending his box fiercely but also showing a lot of quality on the ball to relieve the pressure.

You can see Trevoh’s highlights in the clip embedded here:

It still looks like Chalobah will be sold this summer to make way for a new signing at the back, but whatever happens, another strong season both on loan at Crystal Palace and then back with us since January has proven once again how high his level is.

There will be no shortage of suitors for his services in the summer – the slow and steady rise of his career since those early loans has been so satisfying to follow.
