Manchester United players have reported back to Carrington this week as preparations begin for Ruben Amorim’s first full campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
However, the promise of a squad overhaul is yet to catch fire with INEOS only adding Matheus Cunha and youngster Diego Leon to the ranks so far.
Perhaps more alarmingly, United are yet to shift any of the high profile stars they have place on the transfer list which will be a key factor in how much cash they can splash this summer.
The signing of a central striker is a huge priority to Amorim this window and the amount of funds raised will determine the quality of number nine he will have at his disposal next season.
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is arguably the most glamorous name on the shortlist at Old Trafford but INOES seem reluctant to put their eggs into the Nigerian’s basket, despite the fact he is almost certain to leave Naples this summer.
Turkish giants Galatasaray are the strong favourites to secure his signature having recently triggered his €75 million release clause.
However, as reported by Italian media, the deal is not yet complete with negotiations over the structure of the deal stalling the move.
Furthermore, Osimhen’s release clause has now expired meaning Napoli could, in theory, pull the plug on the deal in the hope of sparking a bidding war between other interested clubs.
Given Osimhen’s pedigree, Galatasaray chiefs will be aware of the clause expiration and the need to wrap negotiations up as quickly as possible.
Interest has been registered by Saudi Pro clubs as well as United, who will no doubt be keeping tabs on the situation.
It feels unlikely United will revive make a late bid for the striker but the longer Galatasaray take to get the deal over the line, INOES could yet explore the option of hijacking the move.
Osimhen would bring as close to a guarantee of goals as possible in the current market with proven centre forwards at the top level at a premium across Europe.
A host of players have been linked with bolstering the numbers at Old Trafford but Amorim is no closer to knowing who will spearhead his attack next term despite being just over a week away from the team’s first pre season fixture.
