Former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has found a new club after leaving Old Trafford in the summer.

The 31-year-old was linked with a move to Fiorentina, with former teammate David de Gea pushing for a reunion.

There was also interest from the Premier League, with Everton and Brentford competing with the Serie A side for the FA Cup winner’s signature.

Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that the centre-back has opted to join Aston Villa instead, signing a two-year contract, with Villa having the option of adding another year.

The Italian also revealed that Unai Emery was so desperate to win the race for the Sweden international that the team from Birmingham also offered him a higher wage packet as compared to both Fiorentina and Everton.

“Victor Lindelöf to Aston Villa, here we go! Medical underway right now approved by AVFC.

“The agreement is valid until June 2027 plus option until June 2028, higher proposal compared to Fiorentina/Everton.

“Lindelöf said yes and now set for medical,” Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

End of eight-year spell with United

The Swede’s contract ran out at the end of last season, and despite being good friends with Ruben Amorim, the club decided not to offer him a new contract.

He was signed by Jose Mourinho for £31 million back in 2017, but he never quite came close to fulfilling his potential at Old Trafford.

Injuries hampered his progress in recent years but he did win the EFL Cup and FA Cup with the Red Devils during his stint.

United have shelved plans to sign a centre-half this summer, and will look to recruit one next year. Hopefully, that does not come back to haunt the 20-time English league champions.
